Exploring Bakeries in Tampa, FL – La Segunda Stands the Test of Time
There are many bakeries in Tampa, FL but few come close to having the long-standing tradition and neighborhood charm of La Segunda Central Bakery in Ybor City. Juan Moré arrived in the lively neighborhood shortly after the Spanish-American War, armed with an old recipe for authentic Cuban bread, which he discovered in a small Cuban town. Moré’s passion for Cuban bread helped him open three Tampa bakeries – La Primera, La Segunda, and La Tercera – with a co-op of other bakers and cigar makers in 1915. The other bakeries folded, but La Segunda carried on, giving it the distinction of being the oldest of all bakeries in Tampa.
The setting may have changed from an early 20th century cigar-making town to a lively, urban destination, but La Segunda continues to provide Tampa residents with the same authentic, 36-inch Cuban bread – still baked with a palmetto leaf to create our signature split top – that Moré served nearly 100 years ago. In addition to maintaining our historic, retail storefront bakery, we are also proud to offer wholesale Cuban bread to restaurants, hotels, entertainment parks, and grocery stores across the country. Clients seeking commercial bakeries can rely on La Segunda for our easy-to-ship-and-store, 18-inch loaves of frozen Cuban bread, which can be ordered through any of our major food service distribution partners, including U.S. Foodservice, Sysco, and Performance Food Group, among others.
La Segunda is one of the unique bread bakeries in Tampa, Florida, with a rich history in authentic Cuban bread making.
